Comments This piece was written to give 5 independent wind bands from Inverness schools a chance to make music together. It is subtitled 'Adventures with two characters from Neil M.Gunn'.

The composer: "You will not find Clachdrum on the map, but readers of Neil Gunn will recognise it as the homeland of "Young Art and Old Hector". Here these two devoted companions share the joys and anxieties of youth and old age, deeply rooted in the native wisdom of the Scottish Highlands. From here, too, they set out for "The Green Isle of the Great Deep" to defend their creative sense of truth and magic against the smothering power of bureaucracy.
Their music has no clearly defined programme, but follows the fortunes of the two main themes (or characters) through a series of free variations of constantly changing mood."
