Settings of 4 poems about trees, in all their different moods. There is the austere but haunting beauty of "The Tree" by Andrew Young, the graphic quality of Norman McCaig's "Woodsman" with the rhythm duplicating the stroke of the axe as the piano scampers like fleeing squirrels; the poignancy of Thomas Hardy's "At Day Close in November", and the dramatic complexities of the Composers lines for "Binsey Poplars" by Gerard Manley Hopkins. |
