Legend
Composed 1983
Duration 18'
Instrumentation Solo 'Cello
Comments

The word 'legend' is used here in its original meaning of telling the story of the life of a saint, in this case, Joan of Arc. Originally conceived as an accompaniment for a solo dancer portraying Joan as a girl, the music first suggests the bells and saintly voices which call her to take up arms and lead the French against the English. Strongly contrasted sections reflect her ecstasy and fears at the forthcoming victories and hardships, until in a mounting chaconne she foresees and finally accepts her eventual capture, trial and death. This piece has been performed with dancer and also as a concert piece for solo 'cello.
There is also an alternative version for 'cello, solo singer and 4 dancers.
