"Triptych, a set of 3 panels, each painted with a distinct subject, but hinged together and capable of being folded". The use of the title implies 3 musical movements of varied character which are played without a break. They are based on the same 2 thematic themes, which are ornamented, truncated, reversed and varied in many ways. The opening section is vigorous and rhythmic, the middle one based on a simple melodic elaboration of the 2nd theme, and the final section has the character of a lively scherzo. |
